He was born in Baden, Germany, and in 1856, in company with his parents, came to America and settled in Chester County, Pennsylvania, near Phoenixville. In early life he learned the blacksmith trade, and afterwards fitted himself for a teacher, and graduated from the Evangelical Lutheran Seminary at Philadelphia in 1876. He served as the Evangelical Lutheran clergyman of Shannondale Church, Clarion County, Pennsylvania.
