He was born and reared in Ireland. Shortly after his second marriage, he and his wife came to the United States, and first located on what was later known as the Perry farm in Venango County, Pennsylvania. He later moved to Butler County, where he acquired title to 400 acres of heavily timbered land in Marion Township. He cleared a portion of the land and there passed the remainder of his days, being survived some years by his widow who reached an advanced age. [TCHBBC, 1198]

He came to Pennsylvania towards the close of the eighteenth century, and settled in what is now Scrubgrass township, Venango County, prior to 1800. By survey of October 24, 1801, he became the owner of 190 acres of land, by virtue of settlement and improvement. About 1816 he removed to Marion township, Butler County, where he cleared and improved a farm, on which he resided down to his death. He was a soldier in the War of 1812, and a man of quiet manners and unobtrusive character. He was a member of the Associate Reformed church, known at that time as the Seceder church.
