He attended school at Sax­onburg, PA, and later assisted his father, but after purchasing his own farm de­voted himself to its cultivation and im­provement. He raised grain, hay and potatoes and some stock. He also conducted a gen­eral store at Saxonburg for four years, and was also drilling for oil on his farm. He served in the Civil War and was honorably discharged in August, 1863.
He and his family were mem­bers of the German Lutheran Church at Hamastown, in which he frequently served as a member of the Council.
