He graduated from Grove City College in 1895, and coming from the Associate Presbyterian Church at Lisbon to Scrubgrass Church, entered the Western Theological Seminary, and graduated in 1898. He was ordained and installed pastor of Riverdale Church October 27, 1898. For five years he remained their pastor. On July 1, 1903, he resigned, and the following day he was installed pastor of the Hawthorn Avenue Church of Crafton, Pennsylvania. After retiring, Mr. Atwell supplied the Presbyterian Church in Harrisville, Pennsylvania.
He was born at Clintonville, Pennsylvania, and received his early education in the public schools of the place. He then matriculated at the Grove City College, and was graduated with the class of 1895, receiving the degree of Bachelor of Arts. He then entered the Western Theological Seminary of Pennsylvania, with the intention of entering the ministry, and graduated from that school in 1898. Fourteen years later he received from his Alma Mater, Grove City College, the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity. Immediately upon graduating from the Western Theological Seminary he was ordained into the ministry and was placed in charge of the Riverdale Presbyterian church, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He remained connected with his first pastorate for five years, and then, in 1903, was placed in charge of the Hawthorne Avenue Presbyterian Church of Crafton, where he remained from 1903 to 1912. On June 6, of the latter year, he came to Greensburg, Westmoreland County, and was there installed as pastor of the Westminster church.
He was chairman of the Presbyterian Committee on Education and had supervision of the young men preparing for the ministry in the Blairsville Presbytery. He was a member of the Presbyterial Union of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Atwell was a strong advocate of Prohibition, but in spite of that is an independent in his voting. He was also a member of the Board of Temperance of the Presbyterian church.
