He was educated at the high school in New Brighton, Pennsylvania, and at Geneva College, and in 1882 commenced the study of medicine with Dr. W. C. Simpson. He entered Bellevue Hospital Medical College, New York, in 1882, and graduated in 1885. After graduating he practiced at Fallston, Pennsylvania, for one year, but later located at New Brighton, where he had a lucrative practice. He was a member of the Beaver County Medical Society; politically he was a Democrat.
