Until his marriage he worked with his father on the farm, and subsequently operated the Walthour grist mill, near Manor, for a number of years. He eventually bought a farm in Penn township, Westmoreland County, PA, on which he spent the remainder of his life. For many years he held the offices of tax collector and supervisor. He was a Democrat, and a member of the Reformed church, in which he was an elder for probably half his life.
