He was one of West Bethlehem's most prominent farmers, and enjoyed a reputation for thrift and honesty. Although his early education was gleaned from the common schools, he was a well-informed man, and traveled quite extensively, spending some time in the “Far West.” He was a Democrat, and although not an office-seeker was one of the leaders of his party. He was a regular attendant of the United Presbyterian Church, of which he was a member.
