He was reared on the family home­stead and received a limited education in the pioneer schools of his district. He remained on the homestead until 1850, and then removed to Harrisville, where he spent two years. Returning home he resumed farming, and thereafter followed that occupation. On the death of his mother he purchased the farm, which con­tained 130 acres of well improved land. He was a Republican, served as school director six years, and also as collector of the township.
