His father was a native of Ireland, who lived and died in the Emerald Isle.

He was born in Ireland, and immigrated to America, settling near Manordale in Franklin township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvaniqa. He was a weaver by trade but also worked at farming. Politically he was a democrat and in church matters his chosen denomination was the Presbyterian.
