General Notes: Husband - Thomas M. Taylor
He was reared in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, attending the public schools and the Greersburg Academy, at Darlington. He clerked in a store and on a steamboat in early life, and subsequently embarked in mercantile trade at Rochester, at which place he was appointed postmaster in 1862, serving fifteen years. He was later justice of the peace and notary public. He also carried on the boot and shoe trade in Rochester. He was a Republican. He was a member of the I. O. O. F. for over thirty-five years.
He left the parental roof at the age of 15 to take employment in a country store, where he continued for about six years, after which he was engaged for four or five years either in teaching or attending school. While teaching at Freedom in 1846 he obtained a situation as first clerk on a steamboat, and followed that occupation on different boats for about seven years. In April, 1862, he was appointed postmaster, which position he held to January, 1877.
During a residence of 42 years in Rochester, Pennsylvania, he held offices for 40 years, viz., postmaster, 15 years; chief burgess, 3 years; justice of the peace, more than 22 years.
