He attended New London Academy, graduated at Poughkeepsie Commercial College, taught school, studied medicine under Dr. D. W. Hutchison, and was graduated from Jefferson Medical College in 1863. He was appointed Assistant Surgeon in the Army Hospital, Philadelphia. He practiced medicine for a time at Newberg, New York, and Nebraska City, Nebraska, and then for many years enjoyed a large medical practice in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was president of the Lavalette City Land Company, and had a winter residence at Pearson, Volusia County, Florida.
