He was educated in the public schools, and grew to manhood at the home farm, remaining his father's assistant until the death of the latter in 1909. He then assumed its management, continuing until 1911, then retired from farming in favor of a business life. He began his business career in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, as a member of the firm of Patterson & Bulin, dealers in automobiles, continuing senior member of that firm until April, 1915, when he became the vice-president of the Westmoreland Motor Car Company.
He was a member of the Presbyterian church, the Junior Order United American Mechanics, and Knights of Malta.
