His boyhood days were spent on his father's farm and he attended the common schools of the neighborhood. He was afterwards engaged in farming until September 1, 1889, when he was appointed baggagemaster at Johnstown, where he then resided.
He was an active Republican and for three years held the office of auditor of St. Clair township.
