He was graduated at Princeton College in 1876, and at Princeton Theological Seminary in 1880. He was ordained by the Presbytery of Lehigh, and was pastor of the Brainerd Presbyterian Church, Easton, Pennsylvania, 1880-88, and of the First Presbyterian Church, Schenectady, beginning in 1888.
