He was reared in Pennsylvania, and edu­cated in the common schools and at Kingsville Academy, Kingsville, Ohio. He became a resident of Tionesta in 1869, and was en­gaged in lumbering until 1883, when he was appointed postmaster by Presi­dent Arthur, serving three years. He was elected to his present office in the fall of 1887, for a term of three years.
