He received a common school education. Until the age of sixteen or seventeen he worked on the farm and then learned the butcher’s business with Jerry Waughaman, of Harrison City. In that place, at the age of eighteen, he opened his own shop which he conducted for two years, and then moved to Irwin where he was in the same line of business for twelve or thirteen years. At the end of that time he went to Manor and opened the Hotel Pool, of which he was for two years the successful proprietor. He then bought a property in Manor, opened a meat shop, and conducted a thriving business. He served one term as burgess at Irwin and six years in the council at Manor. He was a member of Manor Lodge, K. G. E., and in politics affiliated with the Democrats. For two years he served as elder in the Reformed church.
