General Notes: Husband - Dr. David Marchand
He settled on a farm on Big Sewickley creek (Westmoreland County, PA?) and practiced medicine.
In August, 1770, came to Sewickley Settlement, and took up a claim on the Little Sewickley creek, about two miles south of what became Adamsburgh, Hempfield township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Here he erected a substantial double log cabin dwelling, in which was conducted a school for the children of the settlement and which was also used for religious services. He practiced his profession of medicine continuously, and during the Revolutionary war began the erection of a stone hospital, albeit frequently interrupted by Indian raids. The building being stout and with windows heavily grated, was frequently used as a fort or stronghold. The walls were still standing in 1900. It was undoubtedly the first hospital west of the Allegheny mountains, and Dr. Marchand appears to have been the first physician to make a permanent location in the west.
He was a physician of rare ability. He practiced in Westmoreland and adjoining counties, and so great was the number of patients who applied to him at his office that he established a hospital near his home, to which many persons resorted for medical treatment.
Both he and his wife are buried in the cemetery of the Reformed church, near Adamsburg, Pennsylvania.
