He attended the public schools of New Alexandria, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, to the end of the grade, after which he enlisted for the Spanish-American war. He was mustered in at Jeannette, Pennsylvania, July 18, 1898, in the Sixteenth Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers. He saw service in Porto Rico, under General Miles, and also served as quartermaster's clerk. His regiment was in some six engagements, the principal one being that of Coamma Pass. Soon after its return to the United States he was mustered out. For a year thereafter he engaged in mercantile pursuits, and then entered Mount Hope College from which he passed to Mount Union. In 1900 he became a partner with his father in the lumber, builders' supplies and contracting business, and in 1903 added thereto by engagements with the Pittsburg Door & Sash Company, as travelling salesman for their products.
