General Notes: Husband - John Rankin, Jr.
He came to America as a member of his father's family, when he was sixteen years old. He was brought up on the farm and in his early years learned the tanner's trade, which he abandoned to resume farming, to which vocation he gave his entire life.
He was born in county Derry, Ireland. [BHCWC, 154]
He was born in County Down, Ireland. [ONW, 998]
He was born in county Donegal, Ireland, and was in his eighteenth year when he accompanied his parents to the United States, his education having been acquired in the common and select schools of his native country. About eighteen months after coming to America he left home and apprenticed himself to learn the tanner's trade in Elizabeth township, Allegheny County. Two years later he went to Connellsville, where he worked at his trade about four months and then moved to Fayette County. He remained there but three months, being compelled at the end of that time to return home in consequence of an injury. Later he went to West Newton and worked for about fifteen months in the tanneries, and was then again forced to go home by reason of illness. His first employer, Major John Rankin, hearing of this went to him and persuaded him to re-enter his service, although in the then state of his health he was unable to do the usual amount of work. On the death of Major Rankin, about seven months later, one-third of the farm on which the tannery stood was bequeathed to Mr. Rankin, who purchased the remaining two-thirds and resided there until 1866, when he sold the property and bought a farm in Rostraver township, Westmoreland County, where he then lived. The high esteem in which Mr. Rankin was held by his neighbors is attested by the fact that he was on no fewer than nine occasions been given power of attorney to act as executor and administrator of estates. He served twelve years as township auditor, and for many years was treasurer of the school board. He belonged to the Republican party, and was a member of the Presbyterian church.
He learned the tanner's trade at West Newton, Pennsylvania, working in Connellsville and Pittsburgh. Later he took charge of the tannery of Major John Rankin, Sr., and upon the death of the latter settled his estate. He was a bachelor and when he passed away, at the age of seventy, John Rankin, Jr. was willed an interest in the property and purchased the shares of the other heirs. He made his home there until May, 1866, when he sold it to his brother, Samuel C. Rankin. About that time John Rankin, Jr. purchased a farm, later owned by his son, John C. Rankin. It was known as the John Richey farm and comprised two hundred and thirty acres, the brick house having been built by Mr. Richey in 1848 and the barn in 1855. Mr. Rankin was a Republican and filled various local offices, including those of school director and township auditor. He was a member of the Presbyterian church at West Newton. [ONW, 998]
