He was educated at the local public schools and became a farmer and merchant. He was a very prominent man among his fellow citizens and a great leader in the Methodist Episcopal church.

General Notes: Wife - Mary Keene

---

She took a very prominent part in temperance work, and was an ardent believer in women's rights. In 1870 she took an active part in the woman suffrage movement, making speeches in all the small towns in western Pennsylvania. Like her husband, she was greatly interested in the cause of education, and accomplished excellent work along that line.
