He was born at Selins Grove, Snyder County, Pennsylvania, where he received his literary education, attending first the public schools, and later the Susquehanna University, from which he was graduated in 1875. He then took a course in medicine in the University of Pennsylvania, receiving the degree of M. D. in 1878, and on returning home he immediately engaged in practice. A large and lucrative practice rewarded his work. He was a prominent member of the Snyder County Medical Society, and served as its president.
While he is a strong Republican in principle he never gave especial attention to political movements. He was a member of the town council continuously beginning in 1883, always being re-elected with good majorities, and acted as president of that body.
