He enlisted in the Eighty-third Pennsylvania Infantry at the age of seventeen, being at the time a student at Westminster College and joining a company largely composed of members of his class. He was promoted to the rank of captain and met his death in one of the battles of the Wilderness. [HMC 1909, 982]
