The Houstons of Pennsylvania come of a race noted for its physical and mental strength. They trace their lineage far back into the chivalrous days of Scotland, when the destinies of the land of heath and heather were dominated by the tyrannical Edward I. of England. The clan Houston came into existence during the life of the valorous Wallace. Its origin, however, goes back to the time of Sir Hugh de Padvinan, the Laird of the lands of Kilpeter in Strathgrief, and comes in a direct line through the oldest sons down to the present time. The baronetcy is now held by George Ludovic Houston, of Johnstone, Renfrew County, Scotland. The younger sons of the original family migrated from their native land to the north of Ireland, in the early part of the seventeenth century, and are now [1889] scattered through the counties of Antrim, Tyrone, Donegal and Londonderry. From thence came that branch of the family that settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, between the years 1725 and 1730, and from the Lancaster County Houstons branched out the Houstons of Virginia and Tennessee, and the famous Sam Houston of Texas, the hero who battled with Santa Anna, and who was the first President of the Republic. [ECBP i, 93]
The Houstons of Lancaster County are of Scotch-Irish descent. The origin of the family is ancient, the name coming from Sir Hugh De Padvinan, A.D. 1160, he being possessed of the lands of Kilpeter, in Strathgrief, Scotland. In 1250 the name of Houston was adopted, and the titles follow in direct line through the oldest sons to the present time, George Ludovic Houston being in possession of the baronetcy and estates at Johnstone, Renfrew County, Scotland. From existing evidence it appears that the younger sons of the original family left Scotland for the north of Ireland early in the seventeenth century. We now find them scattered through the counties of Donegal, Londonderry, Antrim, and Tyrone, from whence came the first of the Houstons of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, between 1725 and 1730. From these families came the Houstons of Virginia and Tennessee. Sam Houston, of Texas, left Lancaster County with his father's family when a child for Virginia, and after the death of his father went, with other children of the family and his mother, to East Tennessee.
