He learned the carpenter trade and followed the same until 1847, when he bought a farm, later owned and occupied by his son, Esli N., and there he engaged in general farming during the remainder of his active life. He was firm in his convictions, both political and theological, through life supporting the Democratic party and living worthily as a member of the Center United Presbyterian Church.

The two children of his first marriage died young. Esli N. was the only child of his second marriage.
