He received an academic education and at sixteen years of age he engaged in teaching which he followed continuously for about eighteen years. He then embarked on the business of farming. He owned a small but very productive farm of sixty-seven acres of desirable land. He was always an active worker in the Democratic party and filled various township offices. He and his wife were members of the West Newton Presbyterian church.
