He obtained his education in the schools of Perry Township, Clarion County, Pennsylvania, and his agricultural training on his father's farm. In 1883 he moved to Allegheny Township, Butler County, settling on a property there on which he then resided. He identified himself with public interests there and served both as auditor and as school director.
In politics, he was identified with the Democratic party. Religiously, he was connected with the Presbyterian Church.
