His father died ten days after he was born.

He went to Pennsylvania in 1752 with his mother and step-father, but retuned to the area of Basel, Switzerland, and married around 1755. He then was released from serfdom on 30 Mar 1763 and went to the "West Indies" (Virginia?) with his family after paying his taxes.]
