The youngest son of his father's family, he rose to considerable distinction as a Presbyterian divine. He was a very elegant and ready writer, logical and strong in argument, and devoted to the cause of Christianity.
He was graduated at Jefferson College, in 1831, and studied theology at the Princeton Theological Seminary. He was pastor of the Presbyterian Church, at Greenwich, New Jersey, 1835-51; the F Street Church, Washington, D. C., 1851-53; the church at Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, 1853-60; the North Church, Chicago, 1864-66; and the New Castle, Pennsylvania, church, 1866-79. He was a chaplain in the United States Navy, 1860-64.
