He acquired a good common-school education, and afterwards attended the Wooster university, Wooster, Ohio, from which he graduated in the class of 1871. He studied law in the office of James I. Kuhn, of Pittsburgh, and, on Jan. 6, 1874, was duly admitted to practice at the Allegheny county bar, and began practice in Pittsburgh. He was a member of all the courts and the county bar association.
He was a member of Shady Side Presbyterian church. He resided in the twentieth ward, and was a republican in politics.
