He came to America from Lancashire, England, about 1700, and located in Stafford County, Virginia. The old home, Hopwood Hall, in England, was still standing well into the twentieth century, and was in the possession of descendants of the family.

Moses Hopwood, the progenitor of this family in America, married into the Randolph family in Virginia, and had fourteen children.
