During his early youth, he was brought by his parents to the New World, and at the tender age of eleven he started out to make his own way in life. He was employed as a farm hand until 1871, and then came to Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, where he entered the employ of his father-in-law, I. C. Jordan, in whose service he remained until after his marriage when he began farming on his own account.
