General Notes: Husband - Lebbeus Luther
He was but two years old when he came from Massachusetts to Pennsylvania, and his youth was spent in Bradford County. On attaining his majority he located in Clearfield County, and after his marriage he made his home at McPherson's Mill, later settling at the site of Luthersburg, where he purchased 140 acres of timber land. In the same year (1820) he built a large hewed-log house for a hotel, and also in the same year he took a contract for constructing five miles of pike road, on the Waterford pike which passed through his land. He had cleared one hundred acres, and about this time he disposed of one half of it to Jacob Flick, who sold a number of lots. Mr. Luther, however, sold the greater portion of the land for the growing town, and it was named for him as the most prominent man in the locality. In 1847 he disposed of all his interests there, and moved to Ridgway, Elk County, Pennsylvania, where for many years he followed lumbering and acted as postmaster.
As early as 1819 he moved to Curwensville, Pennsylvania, but did not long remain there, the following year he was at the present site of Luthersburg, Brady township, Clearfield County, where he built the first house. For many years he kept a hotel there known as the "Cream Hill Hotel," and as there was no other house between that point and Curwensville, a distance of thirteen miles, it became a noted landmark. Later he moved to a farm in the same township called Woodside place (later Helvetia), and in 1847 he removed from Brady township to Ridgway, Elk County, Pennsylvania, where he died.
He served as the second sheriff of Clearfield County.
For a time in his early life he lived on Long Island, New York. He came to Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, and there he bought, in 1820, the land where Luthersburg now is, its name having been given for him. Messrs. Fox & Company, who owned thousands of acres of land in that section, appointed him their agent to dispose of these lands. He also kept a hotel at Luthersburg, the first tavern in Brady township. About 1844 he moved to Fox township, Elk County, where with his son, David Soper, he was in the lumbering business and had a saw mill. Afterward he lived at Ridgway. It is recorded that he was an excellent marksman. He was a Whig in politics. In 1850 he was elected justice of the peace, and from 1863 to 1867 he was postmaster of Ridgway. [GPHNP, 477]
