General Notes: Husband - William Wheeler

His parents came to the area of Brookfield township, [Trumbull County], OH, from Erie County, PA. After leaving school as a youth he commenced farming, but left the field to enter the broom shop as an apprentice. He followed his trade for many years, purchasing the land in 1874 which he transformed into “Maple Grove.” The maple grove
which he started as saplings later surrounded the house and a beautiful cypress tree,
planted by the wife and mother. The farm, which consisted of two hundred and three
acres, was now known as “Maple Grove Dairy,” being owned by his son, Frank.

He was known as “Honest Wheeler.” He passed the later portion of his life almost entirely as an agriculturist. At one time, it is true, he essayed to handle horses in the business way, but was obliged to relinquish the enterprise, as he was “too honest.” Neither was it possible for him to be a successful politician, his only venture into publicity being as an earnest and outspoken advocate of prohibition.
