General Notes: Husband - Thornley C. Johnston
He received a common school education, and afterwards attended Curry Institute, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He then returned to his father's home and taught school for two winters. After his father's death he remained on the homestead until 1870, in which year he married and located upon his own farm. He was an elder in the United Presbyterian church of Butler. In politics, he was an ardent Democrat.
