He was a member of the West Virginia legislature, and owned a large mercantile establishment at Clarksburg, West Virginia. He and his wife were residents for several years of the "Celestial Empire," [China] where Mr. Holmes transacted and controlled a large American and English trade with the "Flowery Kingdom."
