General Notes: Husband - Dr. John Eckert Shaffer
He was born at Washington, Pennsylvania, where he lived and attended school until 1836, when he entered Washington (later Washington & Jefferson) College, graduating from that institution in 1840. For two years he taught school and studied law at Kingwood, Virginia, and in 1842 was admitted to the bar and practice of law in Virginia. Not wishing to continue in the law practice, he took up the study of medicine under Dr. F. Julius LeMoyne, who was a great abolitionist before the war, candidate for Vice President, and afterwards was noted as the first Cremationist in this country. John E. Shaffer graduated in medicine from the University of Pennsylvania in 1845 and on December 10th of the same year he located, and made his permanent home, at Elizabeth, Pennsylvania. He was one of the "Know Nothings" and afterwards became a Republican. He was postmaster during President Lincoln's tenure of office, was a Mason and an Odd Fellow, and a member of the Methodist Church.
