He was reared on a farm, and received his education in the public schools of Franklin township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. He went to Grand Ridge, Illinois, in 1894, and opened a hardware and implement store, which he conducted for one year and then returned to the old place in Franklin township. In politics, he was a staunch Democrat; and religiously a consistent member of the church of Christ.
