He was educated in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, and remained there until he was about twenty-five years of age. He then went out on the road for a time, traveling in the interest of a sewing machine company. He came to Fairview Township, Butler County from McKean County, where he resided for eight years previously, and thereafter was engaged in truck gardening and in the oil business.
He and his wife were members of the Reformed Church. He was a member of the Knights of Maccabees at Chicora.
