He graduated at Nassau Hall (Princeton) in 1748, became a Presbyterian minister, ordained in 1755, and became quite distinguished in the church. He was one of the first members of the Huntingdon Presbytery.

Webster in his History of the Presbyterian Church, makes the astonishing statement that he was a son of William Hoge instead of a grandson, and confounds him with the Virginia Hoges.
