He and his wife came to Erie County, Pennsylvania, in the autumn of 1822. They raised a family of eleven children, seven were still living in 1884. He was a shoemaker by trade, and in those early days went from one farm house to another, making all the shoes the families wore; he accumulated enough in this way to buy a farm in Waterford Township.
His father was a soldier in the Revolutionary war.
