General Notes: Husband - George D. Hinckley
His father dying when he was eight years old, he was early thrown upon his own resources and thus became a self-made man. As a young man he became interested in business as a seed grower and in that connection he owned and operated seed farms near Fredonia, Chautauqua County, New York, the same having been begun years before by the Risleys. He devoted his attention to the importation and distribution of different kinds of seeds and met with unqualified success in that particular line of enterprise. He became prominent in the affairs of the town of Pomfret and village of Fredonia, and held local positions of trust. He was a trustee of the Fredonia State Normal School, district deputy grand master of the Masonic fraternity, one of the founders of the Grange, charter member of the first grange organized, and master of the New York State Grange for the first five years.
The following pertaining to George D. Hinckley is quoted from the Fredonia Censor:
He was often the recipient of public trusts as Trustee and President of the village, and in 1867 he was elected supervisor of the town and served two years. He took a deep interest in the Patrons of Husbandry organization, was one of the charter members of the first grange organized and subse-quently was grand master of New York State Grange. Mr. Hinckley was a very genial man, had many friends and was greatly respected in this com-munity and by a large circle throughout the state where granges were organized. * * * He was a man of more than ordinary intellectual ability and in his active business life had personal influence and popularity, which made his counsel sought and his judgment heeded in public and political matters. He became a member of the Normal School Board in 1874.
The following are extracts from an article in the Elmira Husbandmen (Grange organ):
George D. Hinckley was well known by thousands in this state, friends who regard him with sincere affection. He was a charter member of Fredonia Grange, Number One, the first ever organized for which the charter fee was paid. At the organization of the New York State Grange in November, 1873, he was selected Master for the short term preceding the annual meeting. In March, 1874, he was elected for a full term of two years, and again in 1876. During the four years of service as Master he was an active member of the National Grange in which he attained great influence because of his safe conservatism, wise counsels and unselfish devotion to the principles of the order that he had done so much to establish. * * * As a presiding officer he excelled in ready tact, for he was an able parliamentarian with confidence founded in knowledge, fair always, tolerant of opposition, but none the less firm in his adherence to the right. * * * The qualities of his mind were such as constitute true greatness, yet he never dreamed he had extraordinary powers. As a writer he was terse and perspicuous, yet not lacking in the flowers of rhetoric as many will perceive when told that the closing charge in the beautiful ceremonies of the grange when admitting Husbandmen and Matrons was indited by him.
