General Notes: Husband - Samuel Jack

He was born in Ireland, and finding every avenue for advancement at home closed to him emigrated to the United States in 1850. He settled first in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he learned the trade of a wheelwright and for a few years carried on that business. He then moved to Derry township, Westmoreland County, in time to reap the benefit of the prosperity which came from the building of the Pennsylvania Railroad. He erected a factory in New Alexandria for the complete making of wagons, furnishing it with every practical kind of machinery then known and used in the business, including a complete sawmill. He turned out good work and prospered in his undertaking, purchasing a comfortable home in New Alexandria, and other property. When the Civil war called for men Samuel Jack responded by enlisting and served until discharged, taking part in the defense against the Morgan raid which at one time threatened disaster to the Union cause. He left the service with honor.
