He attended the common schools in the neighborhood of his home, and worked on the homestead farm, in Franklin township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, whereon he was born, until he was twenty-one years of age, when he married and moved into another house on the old homestead. He then accepted a position with the Philadelphia Natural Gas Company, his work being along the pipelines, and remained with them for one year. He then learned the stone and brick mason trade with Samuel Hill, and was employed as a journeyman for a period of eight years. In 1899 he accepted a position with the Westmoreland Coal Company, beginning by performing general labor work about the tipple at Export, and in May, 1900, was promoted to fireman on the night shift, in which capacity he served for fourteen months. He then returned to the tipple, and in January, 1901, was again appointed fireman, this time of the day shift, and July 3, 1901, was promoted to day engineer. He ran the engine at the Export tipple, and by cable the coal was hauled out of the mines a distance of two miles, handling about five hundred mine cars of coal daily, and making about eighteen trips per day. He did all his work from signals given him from underground, and never had an accident of any kind or injured a man, a fact which attests to the thoroughness and carefulness which characterized his work. Mr. Hill was a member of the Hill Emanuel Reformed Church, and a Democrat in politics.
