He was reared on his father's farm, educated in the old-fashioned log schoolhouse and made farming the business of his life. He owned 150 acres of good farming land, and valuable town property in the borough of Waynesburg, Pennsylvania.
For fifteen years he was clerk of the county commissioners.
He and his wife were members of the Baptist Church.
