General Notes: Husband - Richard Irwin

He emigrated to America in 1761, and resided in Chester County, Pennsylvania, until about 1786, when he removed to Northumberland County, with his wife and seven children, six sons and one daughter, and there another son was born. [HVC 1879, 564]

After his marriage he removed to White Deer Township, Union (then Northumberland) County, Pennsylvania, where he was one of the members of a committee of safety formed for the protection of the Buffalo valley in 1778, and resided until his death. Four of his sons settled in Cherrytree Township, Venango County, at the beginning of the nineteenth century, Samuel, John, James and Ninian, a fifth, Richard, coming some years later. [CAB, 347]

He was 36 years old he went to White Deer township, Union County, then Northumberland, which was then considered the frontier, to find a new home, leaving his wife and family in Chester County. At that time the frontiers were in a very disturbed condition owing to Indian troubles, the settlers driving back the Indians and occupying the lands, making the frontier to recede westward each year before advancing civilization. He afterwards purchased the Basher place at White Deer, in 1777, several years before he removed his family from Chester County.

In 1776 he served with the Revolutionary heroes as a lieutenant in the committee of safety which did duty on the Pennsylvania line. He subsequently migrated to Northumberland County, which then was practically on the Pennsylvania frontier. He was very active and enterprising and was called upon to fill several important offices.
He was a neighbor and a very intimate friend of Dr. Joseph Priestley, the celebrated Unitarian preacher who achieved fame as the discoverer of the properties of oxygen.
