His grandfather was a native of England, and came to America with two brothers, locating in Pennsylvania, where he spent his remaining days.

He and his wife were natives of Delaware County, Pennsylvania, where they were married and remained until 1796, when they removed by keelboat and wagons to Bellefonte. There he started the first blacksmith shop in the place, conducting it until his removal to a homestead in Union township, where he and his wife died.
For two terms he represented his county in the State Legislature, and was re-elected, but declined to accept the office. He was very fond of hunting.
