He was educated in the common schools, and brought up on a farm. He read medicine with Dr. Hiram White, his brother, at New London, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, for two years. He settled on his farm, consisting of 100 acres, in 1839, and developed it from the woods to excellent condition. He was always an ardent Democrat. [HMC 1888, 1118]
