General Notes: Husband - Henry John Ifft

He was educated in the public schools, and in 1866 he went to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and became a clerk in a grocery store. In March, 1868, he embarked in merchandising at Evans City, in partnership with his father. The firm was composed of his father, himself, and his brothers, William, Nicholas and Lewis. In 1872 William retired from the firm, Nicholas in 1883, and Lewis in November, 1890, but William afterwards repurchased a quarter interest, which was later purchased by Henry who became the sole owner of the business. This was the oldest mercantile establishment in Evans City, and carried on an extensive trade.
He and his family were connected with the United Presbyterian church of Evans City, in which organization he held the office of trustee. In politics, he was a Democrat, served in the borough council, was a member of the school board for several years, and was president of the board.

He was about one year old when his parents moved to the old home place, where his boyhood days were spent. He attended the old township school about four months in the year, to which he walked, it being two miles from his home. At the age of seventeen, in May, 1866, he left home for Pittsburgh, where for thirteen months he worked in the grocery of James Montooth & Son, on Smithfield Street. He then spent nine months in a store in Allegheny, after which, in March, 1868, he returned to Evans City and established a general store with his father and brothers under the name and style of George Ifft & Sons. In 1874, the store of J. M. White was purchased and the two stores consolidated, and two years later a large and commodious store building was erected on the corner of Pittsburgh and Washington Streets. In 1886, a ware house was erected along the railroad and was provided with a private siding. John George Ifft withdrew from the business in 1880, John N. in 1883, Lewis J. in 1890, and William in 1893, Henry John becoming at that time sole owner. [TCHBC, 963]
