In the year 1866, one year before he had attained his majority, Mr. Young set sail for the United States, and upon landing came to western Pennsylvania, where he secured employment with W. R. Barnhart, at Hannastown, Westmoreland County. Here he was joined one year later by his brother, John Young, and there the two young men worked until they had established a home for themselves, whereupon they sent for their parents and their two sisters, Martha and Lizzie Young. A year later they sent for a brother-in-law and his wife, Thomas McNott, and Mary McNott, their married sister. These both died a year or two later, but the rest of the family worked together for a number of years on the large Russell farm and estate, which was situated two miles east of Greensburg.

After his marriage he made his home on the old Armbrust farm, which he cultivated. About 1910 he built a handsome brick residence.
He was a staunch Democrat in politics.
