He was in the war of the Rebellion, enlisting, December 26, 1861, in Company I, One Hundred and Eleventh Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry; served two years and re-enlisted as veteran for three years longer or during the war, in same company and regiment. He was in the battles of Cedar Mountain, Antietam, Gettysburg, Wahatchie, Lookout Mountain, Resaca, Dallas, and numerous skirmishes; was taken prisoner at Peach Tree Creek, near Atlanta, and was confined in Andersonville and other prisons for eight months. At the close of the war he received an honorable discharge from the Government.
